NJLA-LGBTI Round Table Electronic Meeting
October 2, 2008

Members attending: Enola Romano, Saleena Davidson, Keith McCoy

Old Business:
Nola received no direct feedback regarding our presence at NJ Pride Day. Staffing it was an issue so it was decided that should we choose to have an NJLA booth again in 2009 we would need a coordinator for volunteers and some way of ensuring we are near the Ocean County Library booth, preferably next to it so the association is clearer.

NJLA program ideas:
Saleena mentioned that the YA Section was asking whether we wanted to do any Web 2.0 programs, but Nola and Saleena were both worried that it might be too similar to last year’s program. Both agreed to table the idea and possibly do another social software or interactive program next year.

Author visits were discussed. Leslie Kahn mentioned having Alison Bechdel, but her price range is out of our reach (approximately $5,000 if memory serves).
Another author discussed was Lucy Jane Bledsoe. She has written titles for children, YA and adult so she’d be appealing to many. Her website is http://lucyjanebledsoe.com for more information on the titles she has out. Nola will be following up on this author to see her availability.
Keith mentioned Gregory Maguire although everyone worried he might be out of our price range as well; he would definitely have more name recognition than Bledsoe. It would also be difficult to get in touch with him without an “in”.   Keith agreed to see about the author of Uncle Bobby, a children’s book due out in October. He will contact the publisher to get more information.
Saleena mentioned the authors of King and King (alas the author, De Haan resides in the Netherlands) but the author of Tango Makes Three, Justin Richardson works at Columbia & Cornell. Saleena agreed to contact the publisher to see what his rates are and his availability for NJLA.

Nola asked if the group was alright presenting only one program at NJLA, and all agreed to it.

Other Business:
The group had a discussion on what to put onto the new NJLA wiki for our group. Nola suggested that we bring ideas of resource links that we’d like to add to the next meeting. We will also post our meeting minutes.

Chas Brack’s upcoming screenings of Dreams Deferred were discussed (He spoke at NJLA a few years ago). Nola agreed to put information out onto the listserv for those interested in attending.

Next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 20 at the South Brunswick Public Library from 10-12.

Respectfully Submitted,
Saleena Davidson, Secretary
