Books that engage the reader and invite her to either respond vocally or physically are gaining popularity. These books can be used in a storytime program or a bedtime ritual. These are recommended for Kindergarten and up.

- Where Does Pepper Come From? (nonfic) by Brigitte Raab
- Looking Closely series (nonfic) by Frank Serafini [these include, the desert, the shore, the garden and the forest]
- Chester by Melanie Watt [Melanie begs Chester the cat to write a good story with hilarious results]
- Chester's Back by Melanie Watt [and he almost succeeds in taking over the story]
- Somewhere in the Ocean Jennifer Ward [This book is beautifully illustrated and it teaches the children about different animals that live in the ocean. Each page has four lines with an alternating rhyme scheme as well as a hidden number. The children always crowd around to try and find the numbers that are hidden within each picture. They often get so excited that they do not listen to the story but if you tell them to listen to the words for clues that does help to calm them down. Another book by her is Over in the Garden. This one is a big hit as well.]

- Look Books by Tana Hoban [a peephole provides a piece of the puzzle.. Can the children guess what the "whole" picture is?]
