An Introduction to Library Box

Really, another new technology that is going to change the way libraries operate?  No, it is just another tool you should know about.  LibraryBox is a portable digital file distribution tool.  It’s relatively cheap and easy to use, allowing you to take and distribute digital content anywhere.  Librarians Chris Murray and Cynthia Lambert of Somerset County Library System will introduce you to this nifty little ditty and give you some practical ideas on how you might want to use it.

Presenters: Chris Murray and Cynthia Lambert of the Somerset County Library System

Sponsored by the Emerging Technologies Section.

Providing Excellent Customer Service Across Cultures

An informative, enjoyable training experience for library staff serving a multiethnic customer base. Humor and the participants' shared experiences will illuminate the value of cross-cultural awareness when working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.  Participants will enhance their understanding of their own cultural patterns and will learn how cultural competence improves customer service and furthers positive organizational outcomes.

Presenter: Ingrid Betancourt

Ingrid Betancourt is co-founder and Director of the New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center (NJHRIC) at the Newark Public Library. From 1991 through 2005, she directed the Multilingual Materials Acquisition Center (MultiMAC), a New Jersey resource center on library services and materials in selected world languages in our state.  Ms. Betancourt is a former president of the ALA affiliate REFORMA, The National Association to Promote Library Services to the Spanish-Speaking, and a founding member of the REFORMA Northeast Regional Chapter.

LibraryLinkNJ’s TechEx: Share Your Knowledge, Showcase Your Work!

The Technology Exchange (TechEx) is a user-generated platform designed to help member libraries learn from each other. This online, statewide resource is a one-stop shop for sharing links to resources on technology in our libraries and in our work lives, connecting members of the NJ library community to colleagues who manage specific technology projects (social media, loaning e-readers, using productivity tools, etc.) and showcases the work of New Jersey’s libraries. Learn about how you can participate, and about what innovative ways your colleagues are using technology all over the Garden State!

Presenters:
Jessica Adler, Assistant to the Executive Director, LibraryLinkNJ

Sophie Brookover, Program Coordinator & Social Media Manager, LibraryLinkNJ

10:50 am – Keynote Speaker

KEYNOTE Speaker: Cynthia Lambert

“Digital Content: The Final Frontier”

These are the voyages of the 21st Century Librarian—our on-going mission to explore strange new worlds…to seek out new content and new distribution methods, and to boldly go where no reference desk has gone before…..

Technology has changed the world.  It has changed libraries.  It continues to change the job of a Librarian.  What we do has not changed:  Access, distribution, marketing, instruction, training and outreach; but how we do it is virtually unrecognizable from how we did it ten years ago.  With more digital content available than ever before, where are NJ libraries today?  Where will we go?  How will we get there?  What do we need to look out for?  An attempt at answers, guidance, and laughs from Librarian Cynthia Lambert.

Cynthia Lambert is a librarian at the Mary Jacobs Memorial Library and is currently serving as the Chair of the NJLA Emerging Technologies Section. In her work Cynthia has focused on training and instruction including programs on Financial Literacy, technology, and new media such as e-books, audiobooks, and electronic resources. Cynthia has a passion for public speaking and brings unique experience to her library via her 10+ years as a Financial Analyst with Dow Jones and Bloomberg News.

New Adult 101: What Is It? What Do Readers Want?

New Adult Fiction (NA) is the hot, new name being buzzed about by those elusive potential library patrons: twenty-somethings. NA is so new that there are no easy answers, but plenty of interesting questions: what is it? What are readers looking for? Where do we shelve it? How do we make it easy for patrons to find? And how do we find the ones patrons will want to read?

Presenters:
Liz Burns – NJ Talking Book and Braille Center

Sophie Brookover - Program Coordinator & Social Media Manager, LibraryLinkNJ

Sponsored by the Reader’s Advisory Section.

Creating Shareable Content on social media platforms for libraries

In this session, John LeMasney will share 10 key ideas to consider when creating sharable content. What makes an article, image, idea, quote or other media particularly sharable? What technologies and methods can help you to give an interesting idea the best chance of being shared? How can copyright be honored and original sources be found? Why is there such emphasis right now about sharing visual media over other forms? Join us for this session to help us find the answers!

Presenter: John LeMasney

John LeMasney is a father who lives and works in and around Princeton, NJ. He now offers consulting in technology, design, communication, branding, and nutrition.
